2009 ICE STORM

A major ice storm hit the region on
Monday, January 26th. Freezing rain and sleet
pounded us through Wednesday morning, accumulating up
to two inches. Then it snowed. Trees
snapped and uprooted from the weight of the ice.
This was the worst disaster the state of Kentucky has
ever seen! We lost all phones (land lines and
cell phones) along with power. I think the
hardest part was the lack of phone service. We
spent more time running around trying to find each
other to talk. Luckily cell phones started
working sporadically on Friday, January 30. Our
landlines into the resort were restored on Monday,
February 2nd and we were then able to get the office
up and running on a generator. On Sunday,
February 8, we finally had our power in the resort
restored.
Through this whole ordeal, we have
all learned just how spoilt we are with modern
conveniences. Most experienced their first proud
moment when learning to make coffee for the first time
in their electric pot without electricity. I
have definitely learned to cook using fewer dishes and
utensils, and in the dark. I can also now
operate a chainsaw!!! Gas grills make wonderful
kitchens, and turkey fryers can boil you a nice sponge
bath. I guess we can survive, but it is a tiring
ordeal! Even with generators, the constant need
for gas along with the need to lock them up at night
is a lot of effort. We seem to be spending our
days loading and unloading generators from one place
to another to try to heat all the buildings that are
not winterized. Oh yes, we have learned a lot
through this ordeal. We do know that generators
and computers do not play well together and laser
printers and Bunn coffeemakers require more
electricity than anything else in our office.
