Spring Fishing on Kentucky Lake
A warm hello and Happy Easter to all of our Kentucky Lake lovers and fishing friends. Don, Eric, and myself hope all of you are doing well and that the spring of 2016 is off to a good start for each and everyone of you. Speaking of spring, the flowers are blooming, and the trees are budding and beginning to get leaves. I have already mowed my yard once, and I noticed some of my azaleas are beginning to bloom. Now is the time to come visit Moors Resort and wet a line with us. The weather has been your typical early spring Western Kentucky roller coaster ride. None of us have any control over it, so you just put your head down and do the best to deal with whatever card Mother Nature deals you. This week looks pretty good with temperatures forecast to be in 60"s for the week. Wednesday and Thursday look like we could have some wind to deal with and maybe some rain, as well, on Thursday. Like I said, we can't control it, so you just do the best you can. As of this morning Kentucky Lake was listed at being at 355.06'. Last week, the lake was lowered to below 354'. I saw a lot of structure I never knew existed. The lake is forecast to rise slowly over the next two days. Water temperatures were listed at 54 degrees at both dams. I am finding 58 degree water in the bays I have been fishing. Water clarity, in my opinion, is pretty good. The main lake is more clear than the bays, but both have some color which, personally, I like. A couple of weeks ago after all the rain we had, some of the bays were downright muddy, so that part of the game has improved.
As far as fishing news... Well, here it is. We have been out getting after them whether guiding or not. Quite frankly, there have been some days that catching keeper size fish was challenging. Thankfully, the last couple of days we were able to put some nice catches together. The numbers of short fish has been encouraging for the future, sometimes catching 50 or more in a half day of fishing. The days we struggle finding keepers is very frustrating, but this is part of fishing. Based on what I have seen, we have 3 different classes of undersized fish, which bodes well for the future. The quality of the keeper size fish we have been catching has been very good.
We have caught our fish in a variety of ways. Some have come off of spawning banks casting curly tail jigs anywhere from 3 to 8 feet of water. Others we have caught vertical fishing minnows and jigs in a variety of styles and colors from as shallow as 8 feet to as deep as 30 feet over our brush and stake beds. I personally do not have a magical answer on a pattern. I just go fish hard, and if what I am trying is not working, I try something else and hopefully figure something out. It generally changes on a day to day basis for me.
Don, Eric, and myself want to thank all of you who have fished with us so far. I really enjoyed all the people I had in my boat this past week. Thanks for hanging in with me on those days we struggled catching keepers or when the wind was blowing 30 miles per hour. The only complaint I have is that an 11 year old young man named Logan outfished myself, his dad, and grandfather two days in a row. I hear this is a crime called elder abuse. Just kidding, bud! You did a great job! Thanks for letting your dad finally catch a keeper. I know he appreciated it.
Whether you fish or not, spring is here, the weather is warming up, and now is the time to come visit this beautiful area and Moors Resort. I have been seeing a lot of loons and pelicans, and we have bald eagles nesting in one of the nearby bays. While walking the other day, I saw an eagle flying around the cabins with a squirrel it had caught. Bad day for the squirrel. I also love listening to the loons. It reminds me of On Golden Pond and makes me feel like Henry Fonda out chasing that fish he had named Walter . Moors has a lot of things to offer. A great restaurant with a new bar, a full service marina with boat rentals, and a lot of things for kids to do . If any of you would like to get out on the water, we have some dates available, so give us a call. I promise you will be treated first class, and we will work hard to show you a good time and do everything we can to put some fish in the boat. We hope to see you soon!
