July Fishing Report
Once again, the Big Kahuna's Fishing Guide Service would like to extend a big hello to all of the Kentucky Lake lovers and fishing enthusiasts out there! We each hope that all has been well since my last report and the month of July has been been treating each of you well.
Lake conditions as of today, July 18, are that Kentucky Lake is listed as being at 358.63 and Barkley at 358.75. Each lake is recorded to be at 84 degrees with those readings coming from each dam. Kentucky Lake is projected to be 358.59 tomorrow and then 358.52 by Thursday. The average outflow for Kentucky Lake over the next 2 days is 40,217 feet per cubic second. As far as the weather is concerned, the word HOT best sums it up. Starting tomorrow afternoon, Western Kentucky is under an excessive heat watch through Sunday. Heat indexes are expected to reach 100 to 105 degrees each afternoon. I cannot think of a better place to be than in the water on Kentucky Lake! The winds for the rest of the week look to be between 5 to 10 out of the west and southwest, and our best chance for rain is Sunday with a 40 percent chance for afternoon thunderstorms. On the fishing side of the fence, I have spent all of my time searching for white and yellow bass. Don, and Eric have spent some time crappie fishing some days with some success. In early July, Eric caught his limit while he was out putting some time on the water by himself looking for some other options for customers. As far as the whites and yellows, we have usually been able to put together some good catches for our customers. As always, some days are better than others, and you just do the best you can. We have had some good catches of the whites, but they have been inconsistent in my boat as of late, and over the last few days very hard for me to find. The yellow bass have been most consistent, and usually we have been able to produce what I would consider good catches. We are still targeting the mouths of bays and major creeks and the old river channel. Our baits of choice as usual are Ken's hybrid spinners and jigging spoons. We usually always pick up some catfish, and an occasional bass when we are looking for these species. I have had some days where the action was really fast, but on others, I have really had to move around and scratch and claw to catch them. If you get off to a slow start, don't get discouraged. Keep moving and looking. Conditions change during the time you are on the water, especially with the current. Persistence and hard work often pays dividends. Sometimes however the fish just win. For those of you that have not had a chance to get away and visit the Moors Resort, now is the time to do so. Summer is passing us by, and school will be in session before you know it. With the weather we are getting ready to have, there would be no better time to come and hit the lake than now. Moors has everything that I can think a person would need while they visit the lake and vacation. There are so many things to do and see in this entire area while you are on your stay. For those of you that might want to give the fish a shot, give us a call. We have a lot of available dates for the remainder of July and the month of August. My cell is 270-331-3519, and Don's is 270-559-1366. We would love to get to meet you, and I promise we will do our best to show you a good time and send you home with some fish. As always, the three of us want to thank each of you that has fished with us at anytime whether it was this year or in the years past. We appreciate your business, and always enjoy spending time with people out on the lake. We always are looking to make new fishing friends and look forward to seeing and spending times with the folks we have made friends with over the years.
